West Zone Yuva FOGSI, 6th – 8th Sept, 2013 (Bhopal)
Brief Report:
The Obstetric and Gynecological Society of Bhopal felt honored to be offered to host the West Zone Yuva FOGSI Conference 2013. The enthusiastic Team Bhopal, worked hard past few months to ensure a scientific program worthy of the chosen theme “Innovation to Implementation – The Adolescent Girl”: A topic of great importance and relevance if we hope to improve the Health of Our Nation. These young girls are our Future Mothers and an investment in their health shall reap big returns in the form of declining maternal and infant morbidity and mortality rates tomorrow and overall a better health for the human race.
WZYF 2013 began with the Pre Congress Workshops on the morning of Friday the 6th September’ 13. The workshops on 1- Ultrasonography, 2- Ovulation Induction & IUI, 3- Hysteroscopy were attended in large numbers.
The Conference was inaugurated on the evening of 6th September’13 by the Vice Chancellor of Barkatullah University Bhopal, Dr Nisha Dube, an eminent educationist. Some key events in the inauguration besides the enlightening and encouraging addresses by the dignitaries were: the release of the FOGSI banner on Adolescent Girls by the FOGSI President Dr. Hema Divakar along with the FOGSI office bearers and other dignitaries; release of the conference ‘Souvenir & Book of Abstracts’; honoring of eminent medical teachers of MP. A departure from the usual was the presentation of saplings instead of bouquets to the dignitaries in consonance with the theme of caring for the young girls. The inauguration was immediately followed by the Public Forum on “Nari Suraksha aur Samaan, Ek Chunauti”. Dr.Nisha Dube had kindly consented to participate in the Public Forum as well. The other prominent public persons participating were Dr Hema Divaker President FOGSI, Shri Shravan Garg (Media), Dr Gyanendra Gautam (Sociologist), Mrs Vibha Patel (Former Mayor of Bhopal), Dr Kakoli Roy (Psychologist), Mrs Asha Mishra (NGO/Social worker), and Dr Nistha Dube (Educationist).
The Scientific sessions began on 7th September with leaders in field of adolescent health, deliberating on the various interactions of social, cultural and health issues involving teenagers.
The Kamini Rao Yuva FOGSI Oration on ‘Innovations to Implementation’ by Dr Manish Machave was received with enthusiasm, as he discussed the various innovations in Obstetrics & Gynecology and their outcomes. On 7th two important keynotes on PCOS were delivered by FOGSI stalwarts Dr PK Shah, and our dear President Dr Hema Divakar. Important theme sessions on Saturday were on Growing up, Menstrual problems, Endocrine problems in adolescent girls, PCOS update, Genetics, Strong Foundations (Nutrition, yoga and spiritual health). The afternoon sessions included ‘Debates’ and ‘Viewpoints’ that brought out discussions on raging controversies pertaining to adolescent health and an effort to reach a consensus. Also, a Panel discussion moderated by Dr Roza Olyai on Teenage Pregnancy brought out many related health issues.
On 8th September’13, the key note address by eminent guest Faculty, Dr Sadhana Joshi on ‘Epigenetics and young India’ and Dr.ME Khan of Population Council on ‘Emergency Contraception in India’ were a scientific treat. Sessions on Gynaec Update, Medical disorders in adolescents, Preventive care, Protecting and empowering girls and technology as regards teenagers followed. Dr Ashwini Bhalerao-Gandhi delivered the Key note address on ‘Establishing Yuva Clinics in India’ with a lot of interaction and suggestion from audience that did justice to this topic that shows a path to better adolescent health care in India.
The conference was attended by 200 delegates and attracted a submission of about 50 research abstracts for oral and poster presentation. Another highlight of the conference was that the best six free papers’ authors got an opportunity to present their work in the main hall to a larger audience.This conference was an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, iron out doubts, and interact with professional colleagues.
